2010 Quilt Raffle   "Maid of Honor"
Let Freedom Ring!
Marine Moms-Bethesda "Maid of Honor" Quilt Raffle

Marine Moms-Bethesda's major fundraiser!

We think you will love this 68" X 84" quilt made from 100% high quality cotton fabric with cotton batting in country blues and reds. Donated by Bayside Quilters in Easton, MD, stitched by Chris and Jane, and quilted by Marie.
All proceeds support Marine Moms-Bethesda's mission.

The whimsical  "maid's" sash says
"Let Freedom Ring".
The way the filler pieces are laid out in the quilt, a "star" forms around the "maid".
The doves are holding sashes that say "Glory", Peace", "Freedom" and "Liberty".
Just  little bit about us...

Marine Moms-Bethesda is a loosely-knit group of caring volunteers who support the wounded, injured and ill combat Veterans and their families at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center.
We have "Stars" that proudly shine Blue, Silver, and Gold with many deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan between us, or we have fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, friends who served during WW II, Korea, Viet Nam, Bosnia, the Gulf War, OEF and OIF.
Some of us have no family ties at all to the military.
The one thing that connects us is a deep appreciation for our military.

Every penny that comes our way for the luncheons goes to the luncheons, pantry items, and gift bags.
Printing, postage, phone calls, website maintanance, etc. and often times food, are out of our own pockets. Website server space and domain name fees are donated by an "Elf".

The Bethesda Luncheon Project is most certainly a labor of love. No one involved receives anything from it other than a "thank you!" and the knowledge that they "gave from their heart".

The meals, grab and go pantry items, "niftie gifties", and the distraction from the daily hospital routine are very much appreciated by
the patients and their families.

Until next time, continued prayers for our military and their families.

Love and Hugs,

Country blues and reds were chosen for this whimsical quilt called "Maid of Honor".

"Maid of Honor"
May 1, 2010 -
At our March 2010 5 East luncheon a friend of mine was there. She was waiting for her son, who was scheduled to arrive on that evening's plane from Landstuhl, Germany. He had multiple gun shot wounds to his legs from a firefight earlier in the week.

We made sure she had extra pantry bags and disposable cameras to hand out to other families who would arrive soon to be with their loved ones who were coming in on the same plane.

My friend told me later how appreciated the disposable cameras were when the Marines received their Purple Hearts - the families were able to take candid pictures of the Commandant presenting the Purple Hearts to their sons.

Not everyone remembers their cameras when they are headed out to Bethesda from another state far, far away. Disposable cameras are just one example of the "extras" we provide the families when we are holding a luncheon on the hospital ward.

A disposable camera - about $10.00 for a pack of three at
Sam's Club... such a little thing... means so much.
Quilt top before the quilting.

Here is the back. Marie used a custom quilting design of "shooting stars".

Matching pillowcase that comes with the quilt.

Bayside Quilters make this kind of pillowcase for us to take to Bethesda to give out to the patients and outpatients at Bethesda.

All proceeds from this raffle will be used for luncheons, pantry items and gift bags for the wounded, injured, and ill combat Veterans, all service branches, and their families at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center who are on the hospital ward or living in the out-patients barracks.

Ticket sales begin May 1. Final postmark date is August 1, 2010.

The winning name of the gorgeous "Maid of Honor" raffle quilt was drawn Thursday at our BBQ at Mercy Hall. Thank you to everyone who participated in our findraiser to support the luncehons we do for the inpatients, outpatients and their families at Bethesda NNMC.

7/16/10 - Marine Moms-Bethesda has held eight luncheons so far this year. We were able to do this with the generousity and help of friends, family, "Elfs", and our wonderful volunteers.

We have eight more luncheons on the schedule for 2010.

It is no secret that the number of casualties in Afghanistan have increased dramatically since 2008. When we lose one Hero in an IED attack, most likely there are others injured in the same explosion who make the journey to Landstuhl and eventually to Bethesda or to one of the other military hospitals.

I remember, after the Surge into Iraq, we could count on one hand the number of combat patients on 5 East and sometimes have a finger or two left over.

A few weeks ago when we were there, looking down the hallway was reminescent of 2005 - one Marine flag after another one in the flag holders by the doors to the rooms. A few Navy and Army flags, but mostly Marines.

Our June 27th 5 East luncheon was the largest by far that we have ever done, serving more than 100 patients, family members, and hospital staff. The cost for this luncheon was $562.94. It would have cost a few hundred dollars more but some of the food was donated by our volunteers and Subway. Thank you!

We have four more lulncheons scheduled on the hospital ward and we have four more scheduled for Mercy Hall.

If you feel that our mission is a worthy cause and would like to help support the wounded, injured and ill combat troops, their families, and the staff who care for them at Bethesda, please consider entering our quilt raffle. Thank you.

“It truly is an honor and privilege to help serve the luncheons at Bethesda 5 East.  It’s such a little thing, but bringing home-cooked food for the Wounded, their families, and for the staff that tirelessly tends our Heroes gives them a break from institutional food.

As one who has been a luncheon volunteer, and then a recipient of the delicious food, goodie bags, and the outpouring of love while my son was a patient, I say

THANK YOU for supporting Marine Moms-Bethesda.”

The winners of the
"Maid of Honor" quilt are
Tom and Marcia A.
from Maryland.
Congratulations!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our fundraiser to support Marine Moms-Bethesda's  monthly luncheons at Bethesda NNMC.
