A friend pointed me in the direction of Mr. Skypeck’s site
after I had been to visit Arlington
National Cemetery, where Teresa and I saw this painting in the
visitor’s center.
On his site, WWW.SKYPECK.COM, he asks for comments from the public about it so I emailed
him with mine.
He replied back and I learned that a limited edition of 18"x24"
signed and numbered lithographs of the painting were donated to the Blinded American Veterans
Foundation “to help fund
a program for wounded Marines from I+A campaigns...it was very successful
and I was very proud, as an Army grunt, to help out my "mud Marines"
with it.”
He asked me to pass this on to you:
“Tell those close to
you that I will not remove the painting until these wars are won..."De
Oppresso Liber" was our motto in the Special Forces in Nam....and
the title means what it says. Thanks..."SKY"”
Where were you on 9/11?
It was a beautiful day here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
I was outside picking flowers to make a bouquet to place
in my Uncle Steve’s casket whose funeral was in a
few hours.
He was a World War II Army Veteran.
I came back inside the house just in time to see on TV
the second plane hit the World Trade Center
and I knew at that moment that we were at War.
In the Chapel at the Veteran’s Cemetery the thought
ran through my mind
that each one of the young members of my Uncle’s
Honor Guard would most
likely be heading off to foreign lands to fight for our
freedoms just as my Uncle
had done so many years ago.
I wondered what was running through their minds
as they folded the flag that draped his coffin.
In October of 2002 my son signed papers to join the DEP
with the local Marine Recruiter
and in January of 2003 he left for boot camp.
So many of those fighting this GWOT signed on the dotted
line AFTER 9/11.
So many have stayed in who could have left the military.
I salute each one of them for their courage and bravery.
Below is a message I would like to share with you from
a New Yorker written for those who are
Our Defenders of America who have been wounded.
Pat sent this to me to take to Bethesda on one of our
visits earlier this year. I am sharing it here with her
permission.
To
Our Heroes
From the front lines of the Homefront,
“We are with you in spirit”
Dear Defenders
of America,
I would like
to introduce myself. My name is Pat, and I am a cyber
patriot and member of many on-line Troop Support groups.
I am from New York City, and the photo above was taken
with the guys at the firehouse across the street from
my building. Engine 54 is the house that lost the most
firefighters on 9-11-01. We have come to learn first hand
here that Freedom is not Free, so we all would like to
THANK YOU so very much for your bravery and sacrifice
in the service of our beloved country.
It is because
of the awesome members of our U.S. Military that Americans
can board airliners today with confidence, and the people
of New York City and Washington, D.C. can go about their
business each day without Fear!
I can’t
begin to express my appreciation for your service or the
pride all Americans feel to have heroes such as yourself
who are willing and able to “carry the battle to
THEM”. I’ve been told that only about 1% of
the American population is serving to protect the remaining
99% of us. In my opinion that makes you among the “most
honored” of America’s citizens.
I pray for
your recovery and I know that although some of the days
ahead will be difficult, you will adapt and overcome all
obstacles. May our Lord also grant you rest for your mind
and peace for your spirit.
God bless
you.
All the best, to the best,
Pat

I met Pat
on an online military support group. She has an awesome
MySpace page
that’s most definitely worth checking out –
it might be a long download, especially
if you have dialup, but believe me, it is worth the wait.
You can check it out by clicking on this link: http://www.myspace.com/193327030
Make sure your speakers are turned on and cranked up.
And… as per a Marine Mom Rule we have … “Tissue
Alert”.
Thank you, (((Pat))).
